PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Rio Tinto’s Kestrel Mine, located 40 kilometres north east of Emerald in central Queensland, is an underground operation, supplying world markets with approximately six million tonnes of coking and thermal coal per annum.

Kestrel Mine Ventilation Shaft Civil Works was a small but significant project for NRW, as it highlighted our ability to diversify in new geographical locations with new clients.

CONTRACT SUMMARY

The contract scope entailed various earthworks works including:

  • Site establishment
  • Three hardstand pads and associated sump
  • Drainage (box culverts and CSP’s)
  • 4 kilometres pavement construction
  • Access road and road furniture

THE RESULT

NRW had an excellent safety record at Kestrel, maintaining a zero TRIFR throughout the 10,542-manhour project. NRW successfully implemented Rio Tinto’s Critical Risk Management into the project.

The NRW Kestrel team overcame unseasonal inclement weather and the challenges of heavy, thick top soil up to 2.5 metres deep, to deliver a quality product exceeding the client’s expectations in professionalism, quality of work and attitude towards safety. The Client commented that NRW were the can do, no hassles to deal with contractor.
