PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The second contract at BHP Billiton Iron Ore’s Port Hedland Inner Harbour Project (PHIHP) was a multi-discipline project at the existing blending facilities at Nelson Point and Finucane Island.

The scope of works included:

  • Bulk earthworks
  • Stone column ground improvement works
  • Rail formation
  • Concrete works
  • Piping and instrumentation for dust suppression infrastructure
  • Road works

The earthworks component comprised 200,000 cubic metres of cut to fill and 300,000 cubic meters of imported fill, with 5,000 cubic metres of concrete installation. The ground improvement work consisted of the installation of 16,200 dry bottom feed stone columns. The contract commenced in May 2012, and had a peak workforce of approximately 140 personnel.
